Easter 2012 was the last holiday that I spent with my Dad. It's fitting, as it helps me to remember about the resurrection and that this life is not the end. It was hard being without Eric but I knew we were nearing the end. So the girls and I got in the car and went to Boise. We spent a week with my parents. It was a week I will always remember. My Dad had already been told he wouldn't make it more than a week or two. This was week 5. My Dad wasn't himself but he knew we were there. He did funny things like: staying up for 72 hours without sleep, decorated the table with stickers, made concoctions with spices, called my girls funny names (Alana was little baby person), made unusual animated faces, sang A LOT, followed my Mom around. One night we came in our room at 3 in the morning and turned on all the lights. It was a hard week but it was such a tender mercy to let us all laugh. We laughed and laughed and laughed, something we hadn't done in a long time. We cried some too. I was so thankful we were able to spend on last holiday together as a BIG family.
And then the day we left there was the biggest tender mercy I had seen yet. He was back. My Dad was as my girls said, "Normal." "Grandpa's back." Megan said. The day we left my Dad knew who we all were by name. Something that hadn't been known since we arrived. His expressions were him. He hugged us all like he always had. He held my sweet Alexis in his arms for a very long time as tears streamed down her face.
He held regular conversations with us. He wanted to go on a drive and so we drove. He knew my little Alana and said her name several times. And then we had to leave. He hugged each of my girls and then as we drove away he saluted us. It was the last time my girls saw their Grandpa but what a blessing it was for them to remember him the way the always knew him.
